Olympics/Cycling: Australia Misses Out On BMX Winnings

After a solid headstart in qualifying rounds, Australian BMX team failed to win any medals in the Rio Olympics.

Multiple-time world champion Caroline Buchanan failed to progress to the final round as she crashed in her third semi-final. Teammate Lauren Reynolds also did not qualify for the finals.

“To walk away from this Olympics, everyone knows it’s a brutal sport,” said Buchanan. “There are no guarantees, and I can hold my head high that I am a champion and I’ve done everything I can.”

In the men’s final, Sam Willoughby and Anthony Dean missed out on medals after dominating the semi-final rounds. Willoughby finished at sixth, while Dean failed to finish after crashing on the second last turn.

“[I’m] obviously disappointed, I won every lap this weekend, but stumbled at the last hurdle,” Willoughby said. “It was a mistake of my own, I dragged my wheel over the back of the first jump and lost my speed.

“But I have been on the good end of this sport many times, it is just the way it goes. I have had days where I have been at the back all day, and you just get yourself up for the last lap, and you’re a hero. It goes both ways.”
