F1: Fernando Alonso to Retire This Year

Fernando Alonso has announced that he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season.

Since his debut in 2001, the 37-year-old has won two world championships in 2005 and 2006, along with 30 other Grand Prix victories.

“After 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport it’s time for me to make a change and move on,” said Alonso.

“I made this decision some months ago and it was a firm one. There are still several grands prix to go this season, and I will take part in them with more commitment and passion than ever.”

Fellow racer Lewis Hamilton said of him, “You are going to be very hard put to find someone to beat him on raw talent.”
