F1: Fernando Alonso to Retire This Year

Fernando Alonso has announced that he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season.

Since his debut in 2001, the 37-year-old has won two world championships in 2005 and 2006, along with 30 other Grand Prix victories.

β€œAfter 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport it’s time for me to make a change and move on,” said Alonso.

β€œI made this decision some months ago and it was a firm one. There are still several grands prix to go this season, and I will take part in them with more commitment and passion than ever.”

Fellow racer Lewis Hamilton said of him, β€œYou are going to be very hard put to find someone to beat him on raw talent.”
