Liverpool v FC Barcelona Preview

Liverpool take on Barcelona on Saturday evening in their penultimate pre-season match as Luis Suarez faces The Reds for the first time since leaving to join Barcelona in 2014

Over the course of pre-season Klopp’s side have developed well and have shown an extra dimension from what they had last season, with Sadio Mane adding pace to the attack.

Previous meetings: The last time the two sides met was in the 2006/07 Champions League where Liverpool knocked out Barcelona in the First Knockout stage on away goals (2-2 over the two legs.) Famously, Liverpool picked up a 2-1 away win at the Nou Camp and were able to fall to a 1-0 defeat at Anfield, ensuring Liverpool to go through.

Before that, in the 2001/02 season, the clubs were drawn together in the Champions League Group Stage, the first of the two games between the clubs saw Barcelona pick up a 3-1 win at Anfield, with Michael Owen giving Liverpool the lead before Kluivert, Rochemback and Overmars sealed the win for

Barca. The second match between the two teams was a 0-0 draw at Nou Camp.

Finally, the two teams first ever meeting was in the 2000/01 UEFA Cup Semi-Finals, the first leg was a tightly contested match which finished 0-0, meaning everything was to play for back at Anfield two weeks later.. Unsurprisingly, it was another close match, however the deciding goal eventually came and it was from the spot. Gary McAllister tucked away his opportunity from the spot just before half time to send Liverpool through to the UEFA Cup Final, which they beat Alaves 5-4 (a.e.t) in the final of.

Current Form: Heading into this game Barcelona are strong favourites after two wins in the International Champions Cup cup against Celtic (3-1) and Leicester City (4-2.)
