Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen was hospitalized less than 12 hours after his team won the 2016 NRL grand final against Melbourne Storm.
According to News Corp, Gallen was struck by a viral infection caused by a medication for his back injury three weeks ago, which was reported to have reduced the athlete’s immunity system.
Because of the hospitalization, the 35-year-old footballer was unable to join his teammates on Monday’s celebrations.
The Sharks won 14-12 against Melbourne at ANZ Stadium, breaking the team’s 50-year drought of premiership win despite the injuries suffered by Jack Bird, Matt Prior, Sosaia Feki and Jayson Bukuya.
“It means so much to us,” said Gallen after the match. “To the club, to the former players who have busted their backsides for the place. This club and this brand, it’s got to be one of the most resilient brands in Australian sport.”
